Die zwischen St. Vincent und Grenada gelegene Inselgruppe besteht aus mehr als 18 Inseln, viele davon bis heute unbewohnt. Da zwischen St. Vincent und Grenada selbst kaum mehr als 35 km liegen, sind die zwischengelagerten Inseln über kurze Segelturns bequem zu erreichen. Ein Traum für alle Segler, die auf den Grenadinen mit dem eigenen Boot das entdecken können, was dem normalen Touristen durch die noch immer fehlende Infrastruktur verwehrt bleibt: Unbewohnte Karibikinseln mit unberührten Stränden und Kokosnusspalmen wie zum Beispiel auf den Tobago Cays. Der einzige größere Flughafen befindet sich auf St. Vincent, nur die vermeintlich großen Inseln werden überhaupt von Fähren angesteuert. Mit dem eigenen Boot ist man also klar im Vorteil.

Beliebte Startpunkte für einen Segelturn um die Grenadinen sind St. Vincent oder das beschauliche Bequia. Das Angebot an Segelbooten und Katamaranen, die in den Häfen liegen ist groß. Doch nicht jeder von uns hat einen Segelschein und ist somit in der Lage ein eigenes Boot zu chartern. Kein Problem, deswegen muss der Traum vom karibischen Inselhopping nicht begraben werden! Winston “African” Simmons ist auf Bequia geboren und ist Skipper des Katamaran´s “Impala”. Es gibt kaum einen Zweiten, der die Grenadinen und das Meer so gut kennt, wie er. Seit 1979 wird Bequia unabhängig regiert

Als Mitglied des Commonwealth untersteht St. Vincent bis heute formell der englischen Krone, wird jedoch seit 1979 unabhängig regiert. Wie auf den meisten Karibikinseln stammen auch die Bewohner Bequias zu einem Großteil von schwarzafrikanischen Sklaven ab. Vom Massentourismus wurde die Insel bisher verschont. Zu erreichen ist sie nämlich nur über ihre Nachbarinseln. Der einzige Flughafen ist der J.F. Mitchell Airport, der von Barbados und St. Lucia angesteuert wird. Hierhin fliegen aber nur die innerkaribischen Airlines LIAT und Mustique Airways. Ansonsten kann man noch mit der Fähre nach Bequia gelangen. Auch wenn die Anreise ziemlich zu Buche schlagen kann, empfiehlt es sich, direkt bis nach St. Vincent zu fliegen. Nach einer Übernachtung setzt man von dort aus mit der äußerst preisgünstigen Fähre nach Bequia über. Die Trauminsel gehört zu den echten Geheimtipps in der Karibik und bietet ein abwechslungsreiches Programm. Hier erlebt man Karibik pur!

Milde Temperaturen das ganze Jahr

Bequia ist das ideale Ganzjahresreiseziel mit Minimaltemperaturen von 21 Grad und einer fast konstanten Wassertemperatur von 26-28 Grad. Der Hauptort Port Elisabeth ist das Herz des Tourismus auf der Insel. Hier finden sich die meisten Hotels, Restaurants und Bars. Die Lower Bay wird gern als Ausgangspunkt für Segelturns und Bootstouren in den Grenadinen genutzt. Denn es lohnt sich, die kleinen, wie an einer Perlenschnur aufgezogenen Inseln mit dem Segelboot zu bereisen.

Unweit vom Hafen und fußläufig gut erreichbar befindet sich die Tauchschule Bequia Dive Adventures. Durch ihre günstige Lage erreicht man von ihr aus schnell die wichtigsten Tauchspots. Zu entdecken gibt es wunderschöne Korallenriffe und beeindruckende Schiffswracks. Das türkisfarbene klare Wasser sorgt für eine hervorragende Sicht. Die Gruppen in der Tauchschule werden relativ klein gehalten, so dass sich das meist lokale Personal auf alle Teilnehmer konzentrieren kann. Schnorcheln und kleine Tauchgänge können rund um die Uhr gebucht werden, anspruchsvolle Touren finden drei Mal täglich statt. Die Preise sind moderat: Schnorcheln kann man schon für 20 US-Dollar, das Tauchen mit Flasche beginnt bei 70 US-Dollar. Ein echter Geheimtipp und nichts für Angsthasen ist das Nachttauchen.

Selbst Prinzessin Margaret hat schon hier gebadet

Lohnenswert ist auch die Princess Margaret Bay, die sich neben Port Elisabeth befindet. Benannt wurde die Bucht nach Prinzessin Margaret, die ihre Flitterwochen mit dem Fotografen Antony Armstrong-Jones 1960 in der Karibik verbrachte. Während ihrer Reise lebte das Paar zeitweise auf Mustique. Dort besaß Prinzessin Margaret ein Anwesen und besuchte von dort aus die karibischen Inseln, so auch Bequia.

Wenn eines in der Karibik Tradition hat, dann ist es die Musik. Über das ganze Jahr finden auf Bequia zahlreiche Musikevents statt. Zum Beispiel das jährlich ausgerichtete not-for-profit-Festival Mount Gay Music Fest, das 2016 sein 15-jähriges Bestehen feierte. Musikalisch reicht die Range von Hip Hop über Jazz und Blues bis zu Funk. Immer wieder treten auch international bekannte Musiker wie die Reggae-Künstlerin Fya Empress auf. Bekannt ist Bequia außerdem für den Walfang, der unter strengen Auflagen bis heute erlaubt ist. Die Höchstgrenzen werden jedoch seit Jahren nicht erreicht, der letzte Wal wurde 2002 gefangen.

Beneath the best-known island, St. Vincent, the islands line up like a string of pearls, one small bit of paradise after the other. Travellers will find much more here than optimal sailing conditions, they will also encounter empty beaches, mysterious, uninhabited islands and a huge amount of Caribbean adventure.

Sailing in a dreamlike setting

The group of islands nestled between St. Vincent and Grenada is comprised of more than 18 islands, many of which are still uninhabited. Because St. Vincent and Grenada are not even 35 kilometers apart, the many islands between them can easily be reached on short sailing trips. Still untouched by mass tourism, Bequia bewitches visitors with its dreamy landscape, cheerful inhabitants and thoroughly Caribbean feel. Here, Calypso, a mixture of African, European and indigenous American elements, is the predominant tradition.

Bequia has been ruled independently since 1979

As a member of the commonwealth, St. Vincent is until today a subject of the Commonwealth of Nations, but has enjoyed independent rule since 1979. As on most Caribbean islands, Bequia’s inhabitants are in large part the descendants of black African slaves.

Bequia’s location has much to do with its freedom from mass tourism until now. It can only be reached via neighboring islands, and the islands of Barbados and St. Lucia control its only airport, J.F. Mitchell. But only planes from Caribbean airlines LIAT and Mustique Airways fly to Bequia. Another way to get there is by ferry. It may be somewhat pricey, but it almost always makes sense to fly to St. Vincent, spend the night there, and to then board the incredibly affordable ferry to Bequia.

This fantasy island is among the most jealously guarded insider tips in the Caribbean and offers something for everyone. This is where one experiences the island life as it has always been.

Bequia: Caribbean as it´s Best

Bequia is the ideal vacation destination all year round, with its minimal temperature of 21 degrees Celsius and a constant water temperature between 26 and 28 degrees Celsius. The island’s capital, Port Elisabeth, is the center of its tourism, and home to most of its hotels, restaurants and bars. The lower bay is often used as the starting point for sailing and boat tours in the Grenadines, as a sailing trip among this string of lush islands is among the most popular of the area’s attractions.

Close to the harbor, diving school Bequia Dive Adventures is easy for students to reach on foot. Its location is perfectly positioned for easy and fast access to the most important diving sites on the island. The surrounding clear, turquoise-colored water magnifies breathtaking coral reefs and impressive shipwrecks.

To make sure that divers receive the access and attention they deserve from the primarily local diving instructors, the school keeps diving groups relatively small. Snorkeling and small dives can be booked around the clock at the school, while more demanding tours take place three times a day.

Even Princess Margaret has swum here

Princess Margaret Bay, which is found close to Port Elisabeth, is also well worth a visit. The bay was named after the princess after she and her husband, photographer Anthony Armstrong-Jones, spent their honeymoon there in 1960. The pair stayed part of the time at the princess’ estate on Mustique, but visited the surrounding islands, including Bequia, during their stay.

If the Caribbean has a single tradition, it is its music. Numerous musical events are held in Bequia all year round, such as the non-profit Mount Gay Bequia Music Festival, which celebrated its 15^th anniversary in 2016. The many musical styles on display at the festival ranged from Hip Hop to Jazz and from Blues to Funk. Internationally known artists such as Reggae artist Fya Empress appear there regularly.

Bequia is also known for its whale spotting boats and whaling, which is still legal there, though under strict restrictions. The highest whaling limits there have not been reached there for years, and the last whale was caught there in 2002.
